At St Stephen's C of E Primary School, we follow the Kapow Primary Curriculum for French. This carefully sequenced curriculum meets the requirements of the National Curriculum for Languages and ensures that linguistic knowledge and communication skills build progressively across Key Stage 2.
Our curriculum develops pupils' understanding across four key strands:
Listening and Responding
Speaking
Reading and Writing
Grammar and Cultural Understanding
Intercultural understanding is embedded throughout every year group, enabling pupils to foster curiosity, deepen their respect for other cultures, and appreciate diversity in the modern world. Pupils are encouraged to communicate with confidence while developing the foundation needed for secondary education, future employment and global citizenship.
Key Knowledge and Skills
Our curriculum develops pupils' understanding across a range of key concepts including:
Phonics and Pronunciation
Vocabulary Acquisition
Sentence Structure and Grammar
Conversational Skills
Listening Comprehension
Reading and Translating
Writing for Purpose
Cultural Awareness and Diversity
Pupils develop these concepts through practical, interactive learning that encourages them to listen, speak, read, write and collaborate as confident language learners.
Curriculum Coverage
Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils build upon prior knowledge while developing increasingly sophisticated language skills. The Kapow French Curriculum provides a clear progression from Year 3 to Year 6, ensuring that vocabulary and grammar structures are revisited, applied and deepened over time.
Pupils learn through a range of engaging, practical experiences including games, songs, role-play, interactive stories and written tasks. Phonetic awareness is woven throughout the curriculum to build clear pronunciation and spelling accuracy, while cultural insights are regularly highlighted and celebrated.
By the end of Year 6, our pupils are confident, reflective, culturally aware language learners who are well prepared for the transition to Key Stage 3 foreign language study.
Learning is assessed through spoken performance, written work, teacher assessment, discussion and pupils' ability to apply their linguistic knowledge independently in a range of contexts.
Our pupils will:
Communicate with increasing confidence, fluency and accurate pronunciation in French.
Understand and respond to spoken and written French from a variety of authentic sources.
Write sentences and short paragraphs using familiar vocabulary and sound grammatical structures.
Apply key language-learning strategies that build resilience when encountering new words.
Demonstrate respect and curiosity for different cultures, languages and communities around the world.
