Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do at St. Stephen’s Primary School. We are proud of our strong Christian ethos, where every pupil is valued and fully included in all aspects of school life. We recognise that some pupils may require additional support or targeted interventions at different stages of their education, while others may need ongoing provision. School staff and leaders work together to ensure pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are identified early and supported through high quality teaching and additional interventions. This support is outlined in our SEND Information Report.

Intent

The Governing Body and staff at St. Stephen’s recognise and value the unique contribution of every pupil. We celebrate diversity in culture, faith and learning styles, and are committed to delivering an inclusive curriculum that enables all pupils to achieve their full potential, regardless of their needs or abilities.

We strive to raise achievement, remove barriers to learning, and improve access to both the curriculum and the physical environment. Pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are respected, supported and treated as equal members of our school community.

Aims

To ensure early identification of SEND and timely, effective provision.
To create a culture and deploy resources that meet the needs of all pupils with SEND.
To enable pupils with SEND to achieve their full potential.
To adopt a pupil-centred approach to identifying, assessing and reviewing needs.
To provide full access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum, including the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum.
To work in partnership with parents and carers.
To take into account the views and aspirations of each pupil.
To collaborate with the Local Authority and external agencies through a multi-agency approach.
To ensure staff receive appropriate training and ongoing professional development.
To maintain high-quality teaching and effective provision for all pupils.

Implementation

At St. Stephen’s CE Primary School, every teacher and teaching assistant shares responsibility for supporting pupils with SEND. Our aim is for all pupils to enjoy school and develop academically, physically, socially and spiritually into well-rounded individuals.

Teachers deliver a creative, engaging and differentiated curriculum.
High expectations are maintained for all pupils.
Pupils are included in all aspects of school life wherever possible.
All pupils receive quality-first teaching, tailored to meet a range of needs.
Targeted group and individual interventions are provided where necessary, including support in:
- Maths and literacy
- Speech and language
- Physical development
- Social and emotional development

Our approach is holistic and may include specialist provision such as sports activities, regulation support, play therapy and Forest School sessions.

We actively promote strong parental involvement and we offer workshops led by both internal staff and external specialists.

We work closely with a range of external professionals, including:

Educational Psychologists
Drumbeat Autism Outreach Team
Inclusion Outreach Services
Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) Team

Additional support includes:

A Speech and Language Therapist working in school weekly (half-termly blocks).
A Play Therapist providing weekly sessions for identified pupils.

Impact

The SENCo oversees all SEND provision and monitors its effectiveness. Evaluation is carried out through:

Individual Provision Maps (IEPs): Used to set personalised targets and track progress.
Data analysis: Pupils are assessed termly, with progress closely monitored to identify any underachievement.
Ongoing review: Ensuring interventions are effective and appropriately targeted.

As a result:

Pupils with SEND make strong progress from their starting points.
Pupils develop independence and essential life skills.
Behaviour across the school remains consistently high.

The Lewisham Local Offer provides clear, up-to-date information on services and support available for children and young people aged 0–25 with SEND, across education, health and social care.

Access to Medical Support

We ensure that pupils with medical needs are supported through well-established systems:

Regular liaison between the School Nurse and Inclusion Manager.
A clear policy for supporting pupils with medical conditions.
Staff trained in Paediatric First Aid.
Individual healthcare plans followed for pupils with specific medical needs.
All staff trained in the use of EpiPens.
Clear procedures for administering medication in school.
Accurate record-keeping of all medical support provided.

SENDIASS

The Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information Advice and Support Services (SENDIASS) offer information, advice and support for parents and carers of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). This service is also offered directly to young people.

Lewisham special educational needs and disabilities information advice and support service (SENDIASS) offers independent information, advice and support.

You can access this service if you live in the borough and:

you care for a child or young person with SEND (up to 25 years old)
you are a young person with SEND aged 16 to 25
