Our Vision

At St Stephen's C of E Primary School, we believe that every child can become a confident and successful mathematician. Through a rich, ambitious and engaging curriculum, pupils develop fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills while building the confidence to apply mathematics in everyday life. We encourage children to think logically, persevere through challenge and recognise that making mistakes is an important part of learning.

Intent

At St Stephen's C of E Primary School, we are committed to providing a high-quality mathematics education that develops confident, resilient and independent learners. We want every pupil to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and to see mathematics as an enjoyable, purposeful and essential part of everyday life.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that knowledge and skills build progressively from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to Year 6. In EYFS and Key Stage 1, we use the Maths Mastery programme to establish strong mathematical foundations. In Key Stage 2, we draw upon the strengths of White Rose Maths and Target Maths and a range of other high-quality resources to create a bespoke curriculum that meets the needs of our pupils while ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum.

We believe that no single published scheme meets the needs of every class. Our curriculum is therefore carefully adapted by teachers to provide appropriate challenge, support and opportunities for all pupils to achieve success.

Our mathematics curriculum develops pupils' understanding across the key areas of:

Through carefully planned lessons, pupils develop fluency in calculation, mathematical reasoning and problem solving while learning to communicate their thinking using accurate mathematical vocabulary.

Curriculum Coverage

From Year 1 onwards, pupils use both NumBots and Times Tables Rock Stars to develop number fluency plus rapid recall of number bonds, multiplication and division facts. These are complemented by our St Stephen's Times Table Badge Programme, which provides clear milestones while celebrating pupils' progress and achievement. Weekly arithmetic tests further strengthen fluency, helping pupils develop the automatic recall needed to tackle increasingly complex mathematical concepts with confidence.

Regular retrieval practice, mathematical discussion plus opportunities to explain reasoning enable pupils to make strong connections between concepts while retaining learning over time.

Cross-Curricular Links

Mathematics is embedded throughout the wider curriculum. Pupils apply their mathematical knowledge across subjects including science, computing, geography, design and technology and PE through measuring, calculating, recording data, interpreting graphs and solving real-life problems.

Where appropriate, pupils use technology to support their mathematical understanding and present their learning in different ways.

Impact

By the end of Year 6, our pupils are confident, resilient and independent mathematicians who are well prepared for the next stage of their education. They are able to reason mathematically, solve problems efficiently and apply their learning confidently across the curriculum and in everyday life.

Learning is assessed through ongoing teacher assessment, retrieval practice, questioning, low-stakes quizzes and summative assessments, ensuring that teaching is responsive to pupils' needs and misconceptions are addressed promptly.

Our pupils will:

At St Stephen's C of E Primary School, we believe that rapid recall of multiplication and division facts is essential for developing confidence and success in mathematics.

As pupils move through the school, they encounter increasingly challenging concepts such as fractions, decimals, percentages, long multiplication and long division. Secure times table knowledge allows children to focus on reasoning and problem solving rather than working out basic number facts.

To develop mathematical fluency, we use a range of approaches throughout the school, including:
